PREVIEW: FRIDAY 12H FEBRUARY 2010, 7 – 10PM

Washington Garcia is pleased to present MY BLACK HOLE a collaborative work by Erica Eyres and Michelle Hannah, the second in a series of production residencies hosted at Washington Garcia Gallery.

During this residency Eyres and Hannah have inhabited the gallery over the dark winter months to produce an equally dark performance video titled Earthrise accompanied by a new series of photographic works . Emulating the format of a psychic channel late-night talk show, Earthrise employs the rhetoric and aesthetics surrounding mystical self-help manuals. The work makes satirical comment on society’s obsession with alternative therapies while addressing our innate longing for resolving existential questions of existence, faith and meaning. In this new body of work Eyres and Hannah expose the language of self-help literature as meaningless jargon, through astute use of repetition and precise comedic timing. The new photographic series further depicts both artists in–character as they masquerade in the ambiguity of hyper-stylized cult recruitment propaganda.

Washington Garcia is also pleased to offer a newly editioned poster to coincide with MY BLACK HOLE.
